Scholarship Donations Urgently Needed!

• Clarion is about to admit another incredible class of students. We had a record-breaking 194 applicants for Clarion 2008, 18 of whom were admitted. We're sure the trend will continue, yielding another extremely strong, talented group for 2009. We look forward to another great year.


• We have the greatest need for scholarships in Clarion's history. While Clarion students are more promising than ever, they will also be in greater need of scholarship assistance than past classes. The current economic downturn has made it harder than ever for young writers to make ends meet.


• The Clarion Foundation has received very few donations in the past year. Continuing costs associated with the move to UC San Diego combined with sparse donations will limit the funding available for scholarships.


• We still hope to build an endowment for Clarion's future support, but we have a long way to go. For details, visit our donations page.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Established in 1968, The Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Workshop is widely recognized as a premier proving and training ground for aspiring writers of fantasy and science fiction. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame routinely mentions the Clarion Workshop in the vitae of its eminent inductees, a number of whom have taught in the program. The list of instructors includes science fiction icons Octavia Butler, Orson Scott Card, Samuel Delany, Thomas Disch, Harlan Ellison, James Morrow, Joanna Russ, Damon Knight, Kate Wilhelm, Gene Wolfe, Harry Harrison, and many others, a number of whom are also Clarion graduates. Clarion alumni include such distinguished modern writers as Ted Chiang, Kathe Koja, Vonda McIntyre, David Skal, Bruce Sterling, Willliam Wu, Cory Doctorow, Octavia Butler, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Nalo Hopkinson, Geoffrey Landis, Kelly Link, Kim Stanley Robinson, Lucius Shepard, James Patrick Kelly, and Kristine Katherine Rusch.

From 1972 through 2006, Clarion was hosted by Michigan State University in East Lansing. 2007 marked the beginning of a new chapter in the workshop's long history of excellence as we bid MSU a fond farewell and conducted our first workshop on the beautiful campus of the University of California, San Diego.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION:

The Clarion Foundation is the nonprofit organization that oversees the Clarion Workshop at UCSD, operates the Clarion Virtual Workshop, provides services for Clarion alumni, and spearheads fundraising efforts on Clarion's behalf. Its mission is to assure the continued high quality and financial health of both the UCSD and Virtual Clarion workshops. The Foundation's board includes science fiction writers Kate Wilhelm, James Patrick Kelly, Leslie What, Nancy Etchemendy, Karen Joy Fowler, Walter Jon Williams, Kim Stanley Robinson, Kelly Link, Nancy Holder, and Cory Doctorow.
